October 29th, 2016 | Thanks a lot for the smog!

Alexander is pretty happy this morning. And why not he’s safe inside on this smoggy morning.
It is rare that I need to wear a dust mask. But today bad air has flowed over from China and corrupted Taiwan’s fresh air. No Good China!
Tainan at 230p.m. not covered by grey clouds but smog from China. Usually you can see blue sky and green in the distance  … very bad China. Thanks a lot!

Kaohsiung. Taiwan.

Saturday. Overcast. 26°c.

630a.m. Bottle feed for Alex. Then it is toys time. I have started limiting Alexander to his tablet usage. Not that there is a problem, but to avoid having a problem in future. I would rather him spend endless time playing with his assortment of toys and puzzles. One of his favorite puzzles is a shapes box. It’s a plastic cube with 3 different shaped holes on each side. And of course there are 12 shaped plastic blocks you can place in each hole. He can.do a few but not all of them at the moment. He also uses the cube as a chair to sit on and as a giant rattle.

12:30p.m. Heading off to Tainan for Mia’s private class.

The air quality today is terrible. Thanks to one of the world’s greatest polluters, China. Even though Taiwan is a green island we can’t escape China’s foul air if the weather patterns decided to blow it our way. Very nasty and annoying. Kaohsiung was not too bad, but Tainan is bad. Airflow in Tainan isn’t as good as Kaohsiung. Pitty such a lovely old city has to deal with the stench of its foul neighbor across the Taiwan strait.

2:30 p.m. Arrived at Mia’s home for her 2 hour lesson. Today we continued with Huckleberry Fin by  Mark Twain. In today’s story Huckleberry Finn and his friend Jim are hit by a steam boat on the river and seek refuge in a small hut nearby. Inside the hut is a woman who tells Finn about some boy who got murdered by his drunkard father. Huck realizes the story is about him and unconvincingly pretends he is a girl. When the woman is distracted by the arrival of her husband Huck goes on the run again.

5:00p.m. Headed back to Kaohsiung. Need to drop into the baby store before I get home and buy a bag of diapers and some sanitizing alcohol.

7:00 p.m. Home again, home again jiggity jig.

  1. Aw, that’s too bad. What a cute face. I babysit a baby who is a year and 6 months and he loves the same game, in fact just yesterday he was putting the shapes in the holes. At first he wanted help, so I helped him, but I wanted to see how much he could do by himself, and he did a lot too! Smart boys. How often does it get smoggy?

    1. Nice. Sounds like these boys are revealing future genius. Great! The smog will depend where you live in Taiwan as the terrain effects it. Taiwan is about 70% mountainous. It’s the low flat areas where Smog gets trapped if there are not enough winds circulating at the time. Kaohsiung gets it bad maybe once every two months. Tainan more often unfortunately.
